The History of the Elyton Hotel
The Elyton Hotel is one of Birmingham’s finest hotels, named after Elyton, Alabama the original name of the city of Birmingham. The hotel is located at 1928 First Avenue North. The Elyton Hotel sits in the historic Empire building that is a symbol of the golden era of Birmingham’s great industrial and manufacturing history. The Empire building was built in 1909 and now hosts the 16-story four-star boutique hotel. At the corner of 20th Street and First Avenue North, where the Elyton now sits, was known as the heaviest corner on earth. It gained this title because of the four major banks that sat on the intersection’s corners.
